The customer interface I45x specifies the Basic Rate Interface (BRI) It was intended to become the standard subscriber interface The BRI specifies two bearer channels and a data channel The two bearer channels would bear the customer s information The initial concept had this as being everything from analog telephone calls (digitized) to teleconferencing data and these would be switched channels The only difference between a conventional telephone circuit and a bearer channel is that the bearer channel would be 64 KB/s all the way to the customer (Note in the current network, your analog telephone circuit is digitized to 64 KB/s at the local Telco office before being switched across the network It is then turned back into analog at the far end before being delivered to the called party) Now with BRI, we have not one, but two such telephone circuits Since it is digital, we have switched digital 64 KB/s to (theoretically) anywhere in the world The problem with the existing Telco network is that the signaling information shares the telephone channel with the user information With plain voice circuits, a customer doesn t notice or care With the advent of modems, this represents a loss of channel bandwidth, and with digital transmission, it means a loss of usable bits per second The customer is therefore stuck with 56 KB/second, instead of the actual channel rate of 64 KB/second The BRI interface therefore specifies a multi-functional data channel at 16 KB/s that could handle signaling (its primary function) and network data (X25) when not needed for signaling BRI is therefore referred to as 2B + D, two bearer channels and a data channel Figure 9-1 shows the BRI graphically and indicates the bandwidth allocation on the ISDN interface Remember that this is a time-division multiplexed interface where the B, D, and overhead bits are interleaved.

All Vantec speed controllers are built in a similar manner Two circuit boards are separated by standoffs the upper board contains the radio interface, control logic, and 5-volt power supply, and the lower board contains masses of FETs wired in parallel and arranged in two separate H-bridges The FETs are all mounted flat to the bottom of the Vantec s aluminum case, which acts as a heat sink for the controller The physical nature of the controller two separate boards and many discrete components makes the Vantec controllers particularly susceptible to impact shock It is best not to mount the Vantec unit directly to your robot s frame Instead, use rubber insulation bumpers or padding to protect the Vantec ESC from impact shock Figure 7-15 shows a Vantec electronic speed controller The Vantec controller does not have a sealed case but is mounted in an open aluminum frame Before mounting it in your robot, you must make a cover to seal over the open boards and keep foreign matter off the exposed printed circuit boards Combat arenas are full of metal chips just waiting to get inside your robot and short exposed electrical connections The larger Vantec controllers are C-shaped extruded aluminum cradles with the circuit boards mounted inside A piece of thin aluminum or Lexan (a polycarbonate plastic) bent into a C shape will cover over the open frame of the controller Use tape to seal the seam between the edges of the shield and the frame and the hole for the radio signal wires The smaller series controllers are mounted in an aluminum box with only one side open While this might make them seem more protected, in practice, the box tends to act as a trap for any bits of metal that do find their way in letting them rattle around until they cause a fatal short These can be sealed with a bit of tape, although a nice Lexan plate cut to fit the box opening looks nicer With either Vantec, you should line the inside of the box and cover with double-sided tape to catch any bits of metal that do make it inside Don t be concerned about the shielding s effect on the Vantec s heat dissipation The power-switching transistors inside are mounted.

Figure 9-1: BRI bandwidth allocation In Figure 9-2 , the BRI is created by the Network Terminal type 1 (NT1) The NT1 creates a four-wire bus called the T interface onto which each ISDN device is connected We will discuss the interface designations user (U), terminal (T), system (S), and rate (R) in the following discussion Two points should be kept in mind First, the boxes shown in Figure 9-2 can be combined in any reasonable way Second, it is not necessary to have an NT2 element This means that the S and T interfaces are logically and physically identical They have separate identities to allow us to describe the functionality of the NT2 element The NT2 could create multiple S interfaces and perform the switching to adjudicate access to the B channels on the T interface Since the two interfaces are the same, they are frequently referred to as the S/T interface As described below, but not shown in Figure 9-2 , up to eight devices can be connected to the bus
