harePoint 2003 is an impressive platform for providing, among other things, document collaboration. Microsoft provided a robust foundation, but some user interface (UI) elements could be improved. One such UI improvement is the addition of a treeview for document libraries, a visual metaphor that users have come to expect based on their experience with Windows Explorer. It s a seemingly small feature that will make a large difference in how users perceive the quality of your SharePoint implementation. In this section, I will take you through the steps of creating a document library treeview (TreeView) web part that will allow your users to view and navigate complex document libraries with ease. To illustrate the benefits, let s look briefly at the differences between the native SharePoint document library web part and the TreeView described in this chapter. Figure 5-1 shows how two document libraries, Internal Documents and Shared Documents, might be displayed using out-of-the-box SharePoint document library web parts.
